SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT! - BUILDING A PORTFOLIO

At the University Of Bolton this week, we received a lecture from Jamie Hubbold, a level construction artist from TT Games, who is a former University Of Bolton graduate. Jamie covered many different aspects of gaining entry into the games industry, including CV production, portfolio work and gaining contacts.

A key point of interest here is portfolio work, as I am currently building my own and a few people struggle to show off their best side on their own portfolio websites. Certain roles within the games industry can find it hard to show their work in an interesting way, such as programmers showing off literal lines of code produced. Artists and Designers sometimes putting their fingers into all of their projects instead of focusing on their best work.
One of the many points Jamie raised was tailoring your portfolio via researching roles in the industry you would prefer to fill and putting these aspects to the fore of your portfolio. For example if you would like to move into horror related projects primarily then show off atmospheric shots as a designer or maybe creature character designs as an artist.
A good portfolio is paramount and the importance of a portfolio cannot be mistaken. It should showcase the individuals accomplishments, skills and attributes as well as experiences (JIST, 2003). Looking into other artistic design professions such as Photography is a good way to see how portfolios should showcase the artists best possible work. Jane Breakell explains that your portfolio is basically you cat-walking your work to potential investors, investors being employers (Breakell, 2016). An interesting point Jane raises however in line with Jamie's earlier notion of tailoring your portfolio is to keep a range of portfolios, thus allowing the individual to capitalise on any opportunity rises.
