Valkyrie

Saga Of The Fallen

Assignment Brief Description

This assignment given was to produce a narrative document for a game which was to look into an aspect of history and extrapolate upon it, with a key focus being on finding an aspect of history overlooked by many in the public. The project consisted of producing a narrative document, which was broken into two parts; Firstly was the production of a concept documentation and secondly the full narrative document with a scene-by-scene breakdown of the game, including assets chosen from a budget and detailed production of quests and battle designs.

Design Choices

As stated by the brief the game had to encompass a form of history, thus the team consisting of myself, Callum Wilson and Alex Morris chose Norse Mythology.  More importantly the idea was to look deeper into the Valkyrie myth section and their role within the mythology.  The team also tied this into the fact Norse mythology is relatively popular in the media at this time, with shows such as Vikings being watched by millions of people.

Plot Synopsis

The Valkyrie, Oili, is left stranded on the mortal plains of earth via an attack from Killian. A farmer devastated by the loss of his brother, and wanting the means to venture to Valhalla to retrieve him.

Oili, having her equipment stolen, and no way of returning home, she sets out on a journey through unfamiliar lands to reclaim her lost life. She meets a hermit called Heimdall, who aims Oili at Stormguard, having heard a rumour that Killian has ventured there.

Tracking her assailant, Oili ends up in the coastal town of Stormguard, where she must help fend off Jarl Loki’s army as they attack the town. This battle allows the Jarl of Stormguard, Bjorn, to see Oili as an asset.

With Jarl Bjorn appeased, he points Oili to the town of Ricthold, claiming that there had been reports of a strange man selling pieces of fine armour.

Arriving in Ricthold, Oili continues her search, garnering intrigue that will point her in the direction of her equipment. It leads Oili to a nearby encampment of barbarians, from whom she must obtain information.

At the encampment Oili is met by Heimdall, who informs her that they had seen Killian heading to Colterheim. After travelling to the town of Colterheim, Oili must delve into its dark caves to carry out tasks for its Jarl, Loki (Loki is behind the plan to take Oili’s armour).

Once her loyalty is proved, Jarl Loki explains to Oili the location of her assailant. Finally catching up with Kilian, she fights the Deathless, a group of powerful Vikings, in Ricthold.

Having defeated the Vikings, Oili discovers that they were puppets to a bigger threat, Jarl Loki, who intends to use Oili’s equipment to get to Valhalla.  Oili returns to Heimdall who advises her on regaining her armour, deeming Loki to be beyond the reach of Oili until she’s more powerful.

Knowing the situation to be far more desperate than previously thought, Oili quickly recovers the final pieces of her equipment. Returning to Colterheim, Oili confronts the greater villain of the game, Loki.

Epilogue: Oili finally makes it back to Valhalla after defeating Loki. Oili tells Killian that she can’t bring his brother back, but that she could make sure the two are reunited. With that Oili returns to being the ethereal being she once was.
